UCA’s ‘Rotisserie Chicken’ Guy reveals his inspirations

UCA sophomore, Connor McClure – also known as Chicken Guy – is still reeling from the campus wide recognition he received after eating a full rotisserie chicken on the Ferguson Chapel steps one month ago.

“I've performed in front of large crowds, just being in band before, but I've never performed in a crowd that big, that they're just looking at me,” McClure said. “So it felt a little strange, but it was definitely a cool experience to meet all sorts of people … just meet a bunch of people, have your own 15 minutes of fame.”

McClure got the idea for the event during a conversation with a friend in band practice.

“I was like, ‘What if I just eat rotisserie chicken?’ And he was like, ‘Dude, that's so funny. You should do that.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, I'm gonna do that.’ And then pretty much the next day, or whenever I had the chance, I went to the library, I made something in Canva … printed them off, put them up. Put a few around campus. I just started making posts on YikYak, and that's how I got a lot of traction.”

Since the rotisserie chicken event, there has been word of several events now being planned, inspired by McClure's idea.

“People don't really talk about the funny stuff that happens at UCA. But I think doing this is really interesting because I remember hearing from somebody that the performative male contest was inspired by what I did,” McClure said. “And I think that's an interesting legacy to leave, or you're just inspiring people to do all sorts of stuff like this. I think it's cool that people are taking the idea that I had and making it into other different events.”

After his first venture being a huge success, McClure is deciding what he wants to do next.

“I have definitely been thinking about what I would eat. And a turkey is not going to happen. Turkeys are way too big. I would waste it. That's just way too much meat. Two rotisserie chickens, one was challenging enough. But I have been thinking about maybe a large fruit or a large amount of something. Maybe I could eat 10 corn dogs, or perhaps an entire watermelon,” McClure said.
