The Super Typhoon Fung-wong hit the northeastern coast of the Philippines on Sunday, the storm had already left at least two people dead and forced more than a million people to evacuate from flood and landslide-prone areas.

The typhoon blew into Dinalungan town in Aurora province Sunday night after dropping hard rain and wind in northeastern Philippine provinces all day from offshore, winds recorded of up to 115 mph and gusts of up to 143 mph.

Fung-wong’s 1,118 mile wide rain and wind band, it is the biggest typhoon to threaten the Philippines in years. The typhoon came from the Pacific while the Philippines was still dealing with the damage brought on by Typhoon Kalmaegi, which left at least 224 people dead in central provinces on Tuesday before pummelling Vietnam, where at least five were killed.

A villager drowned in flash floods in the eastern province of Catanduanes and another died in Catbalogan city in eastern Samar province when she was hit by debris, officials said.

The Philippines is plagued by around 20 typhoons and storms every year. The country also is often struck by earthquakes and has more than a dozen active volcanoes, making it one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries.
